Introduction

Hello, my relatives. I greet you with a heartfelt handshake. My name is Clementine Bordeaux. I live in Rapid City, SD. I grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation. I did not grow up speaking Lakota, but I am still learning & practicing.

Quick Bio

I am an assistant professor in the History of Art and Visual Culture at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I received my Ph.D. in Culture and Performance from the World Arts and Cultures/Dance Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. I work across multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary fields and collaborate with artists, cultural bearers, and community activists.

Research

I chose an interdisciplinary doctoral program that employs theories of culture and theories of performance, which provide analytical lenses to understand how communities represent, perform, and communicate culture. As a doctoral student in Culture and Performance, I strive to develop media-based projects with and for Indigenous communities by interweaving ethnography, new media, and my understanding of Lakota ontology. Artistic Collaboration

As a community member, artist, and scholar, my goal is to work with and for Indigenous communities. I have a collaborative working relationship with Lakota artists and curators. My work has also led me to work collaboratively across culture, discipline, and art forms.

Upcoming exhibitions at Racing Magpie (Rapid City, SD) and Zane Bennett Contemporary Art (Santa Fe, NM).
